A New Idea
So I think what I am going to do is get food from Subway. I haven't been eating nearly enough whole grains or veggies. I know that this is a temporary diet and food digests all the same but I have been feeling less satisfied. So today for lunch I went to Subway and got a foot long sandwich. I used whole wheat bread, low fat meat, and lots of veggies w/ lite Mayo. Then I took the sandwich home and cut it into six pieces. The pieces wer about 2 x 3 inches and being as thick as it was came out to be 5 bites. so now I can either have a piece for lunch and then for dinner or I can have them for lunch and making something else for dinner. But the portions are just right, I get all of the food groups (even dairy because I put cheese on it) and it is very tasty. Plus I think I could do this pretty long term if I varied what sandwich I got each time. Other things I will throw in occassionally are Special K Bars, Hot pockets, Dollar menu chicken sandwiches, and a bagel with cream cheese. This diet sure makes groceries less expensive. I think I have only spent about 50 dollars on food this month!

Such a great idea!
That's a great idea!!! I could live on subway, sushi (problem is I can't stop at one so it could become very unsafe for me lol) and chocolate! I might try that either today or tomorrow! But instead of a foot long I'll get a 6 inch and cut it in half cause there is a subway in the same complex as my work... And that way I won't be tempted to go crazy and also it stays fresher...
Thanks for the awesome idea Jenny P! Love it lol

Re: A New Idea
I find it easier to rotate a couple items. Last time I did this I was consumed with creating the perfect mini meals. Dr Lewis recommends to just have a regular size meal, take 5 bites and throw the rest away. He said if you make a small meal, you'll try to cram it into 5 bites. ( he was right). And if you store the leftovers, you'll probably eat more than twice a day (he was right).
He also also told me to eat the 5 bites fast, then get on with your day. I was doing the opposite, trying to savor each bite.

I think you are right, eating the five bites and throwing the rest away helps with the "discipline" part. 5 bites is 5 bites!! I tried the minimeals thing, and think you are right, you try to "cram as much as you can" in. The preportioned stuff works for me in the beginning, when I need the help when my willpower isn't quite there yet. Any time I slip for a few days, I go back to them to remind myself what five bites "feel like" in my stomach

I'm trying to get my head around throwing food away
Hi,
I have read the posts above and Walkerlori can you tell me how you got a
direct response from Dr Lewis?
Did you have an appt at his office or did you pay the $50 to join his forum?
I'm considering sppending the $50 (although I'm not working right now) because I can't
find a post anywhere on the internet from someone who lost all the weight
they wanted to and successfully transitioned off the diet to 'normal' eating.
Does anyone else know someone who has done that?
Cheers,
Shawn

Did you read any of the old blog that started this forum? It was the 5 bite diet on diet blog.com. If you read through it. There were a lot of success stories. I would also recommend buying the book.

OK I will check out that blog
I didn't read every post in that blog but now that I have read most of the
posts in this forum it sounds like Diet74 was able to transition to normal
eating and keep the weight off.
I will read further since I would like to save the $50 if possible!
thanks

Yeah totally
But the thing to keep in mind about "eating normally" is that once you have eaten less and loss the weight hopefully you will be ably to find the portions that will allow you to eat until you are full without gaining any of the weight back.

I agree Jenny
I guess I should have said the 'new normal' for me.
As many other people have said before me, after doing the 5 bite diet
I can't believe how much I used to eat. Even when I go off the diet and
have more than 5 bites I still don't eat as much.
I know my stomach has shrunk which really helps but it is more the mindful
eating that has changed. I think because I only get five bites I eat exactly
what I want and buy things I really want to eat rather than eating lots of
salads or low calorie food that I really don't enjoy.
I am still working on it, this is only my 2nd week and I haven't been perfect
but I feel that something is different and I really like it!
