Pinitol, D-Chiro-Inositol & Inositol
Three natural substances have recently made a name for themselves in the PCOS community: pinitol, d-chiro-inositol & inositol.
Their use has been linked to lowered cholesterol, moderate weight loss and increased ovulation in women with PCOS, which in turn aids in the increased chance for becoming pregnant. In fact, it is believed that a deficiency in d-chiro-inositol is partially to blame for the insulin resistance in women with PCOS. So, if this deficiency can be addressed, the condition itself could be addressed as well.

d-chiro-inositol
One of the central studies seems to be one in the New England Journal of Medicine (Nester, et al. Ovulatory and metabolic effects of d-chiro-inositol in the polycystic ovary syndrome. New England Journal of Medicine 340 (1999): 1314-1320). They used 1200 mg. oral doses of D-chiro-inositol in the form of a product-in-development called INS-1 from Insmed Pharmaceuticals. 22 women with PCOS were matched against a placebo group of 22 women also with PCOS. Conclusions: "D-Chiro-inositol increases the action of insulin in patients with the polycystic ovary syndrome, thereby improving ovulatory function and decreasing serum androgen concentrations, blood pressure, and plasma triglyceride concentrations.)

Vitamin D linked to better cognition in elderly
People receiving home care had a higher risk than others of not getting enough vitamin D, researchers said, because they rarely go outside in the sunlight.
Although sunlight isn’t the only source of vitamin D - fortified milk and fish with omega-3 fatty acids are common food sources – most people need the sun to get a sufficient amount of the vitamin, as only a small amount is obtained through food, according to WebMD.
